A sweet elderly woman worked at the cash register in the store near my house. Always friendly and kind. And then one day, I noticed that when there were many items on the receipt, she would always ring up vegetable oil, which, of course, wasn’t part of my purchase.

The first time, I thought she had just made a mistake. But when the situation repeated itself multiple times, I went to the store and bought eight bottles of that very oil, noticeably angry, making it clear that I knew about her scam.

She wasn’t at all embarrassed—she calmly rang everything up and asked, “Planning to fry a lot of potatoes?”

When I got home, I discovered that there were nine bottles on the receipt. That old trickster fooled me again! I don’t go there anymore at all!
